After a diverse post‑Navy career, Bill Pinkney fulfilled his lifelong dream by becoming the first African American to single‑handedly sail around the globe (1990–1992) aboard his 47‑foot sloop  'The Commitment', documenting the 27,000‑mile voyage for 30,000 schoolchildren and earning a Peabody Award for the film “The Incredible Voyage of Bill Pinkney.”
